Based in the Southern district of Sikkim, the town of Kewzing lies at an altitude of over 4500 feet, with the towering mountain ranged of Kabru and Narsing in the backdrop.
Kewzing is located in the picturesque surroundings of thick forest cover, most of which is cardamom plantations. It is a small unassuming village, which is relatively unvisited by tourists and has remained undeveloped and unexposed to busy modern life, making it an extraordinary holiday for those who like a slice of genuine rural India. The village has a strong Buddhism stronghold, keeping the atmosphere traditional and serene.
Early June is a great time to see the best of Kewzing with a host of adventure and cultural activities to enjoy. The cold, snows of winter have passed but the temperature, thanks to the altitude remains cool, a welcome respite from the heat found across most of India at this time of year.
Here are some activities to enjoy in June:
1. Mountain Biking
Kewzing falls on one of the greatest mountain biking trails of the country. The route from Gangtok – Rumtek – Sang – Sirwani – Temi – Damthang – Rabong – Kewzing – Tashiding – Yoksum – Geyzing – Dentam – Rinchenpong – Soreng – Sombaria – Jorthang – Namchi – Rangpo should be done with professional guides. This is one of the most adventurous and coveted routes in India.
2. Bird Watching
Local hot-spots for birdwatching are a favourite with travellers and June is a great month for spotting a wide range of species. Roam around the village in the mornings on your own or ask for some local guidance to see a host of avian friends like Maroon-Backed Accentor, Red-faced Liocichla, migrant ducks, Black-necked Crane, Black-tailed Crane, Blood Pheasant, Himalayan Monal, Brown Parotbill, Fire-tailed Myzornis, Cutia, Sapphire flycatcher, White browned Bush Robin and more. Be sure to carry a pair of binoculars.
The monastery of Kewzing, the Lepcha monastery, was built in the reign of Chogyal Thutob Namgyal and is one the serenest spots here. You can sit here for hours just absorbing the peace and tranquillity.
4. Handicraft Centre
There is a small handicraft centre in Kewzing where locals make some exquisite handicrafts. Hand-made rugs, cane baskets and traditional handlooms are in plenty and you can actually see local artisans working on them.
5. Local Interaction
You can safely walk in Kewzing and see the daily local life pass by. People are friendly and happy to invite you over for a cup of tea or a meal. Enjoy the company of locals while walking in the village, absorbing their stories and experiencing their warm hospitality.
6. Trekking and Exploring
June is great to take some short treks by yourself, manoeuvring easy trails. Go for sight-seeing tours like monasteries at Ralang, Temi Tea Garden, Tibetan Carpet Centre, Rayong Sunrise Point and the Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary.
