This month our blog theme is the celebrations of India, and with good reason. The festivals of Dussehra and Durga Puja, both in October this year, are colourful and exciting events.
Dussehra is a festival that celebrates the victory of good over evil, as it is the time when Lord Rama defeated Ravana. Massive effigies of Ravana and his two brothers filled with fire crackers, are erected in parks. These explode at dusk to the glee and cheer of the masses particularly children. There are lots of fairs and fetes which complement these events. In Old Delhi there is a beautiful procession called Ram Leela, which attracts throngs of people every year. The festival falls 10 days before Diwali and this year was on Sunday, the 17th of October. Share your pictures of the event on our Facebook pages.
Durga Puja is a major festival celebrating the prowess of Goddess Durga. In Calcutta, processions with extravagant statues of her are carried through the city. The five day festival takes over Calcutta completely in the middle of October but it’s an important festival in Delhi as well. In C.R. Park in Delhi big fairs and prayers are held for the occasion.
