Nainital Lake Homestay Has Colonial History

Above Nainital Lake

We have a new homestay – and it has got a fascinating history.

The Hive is perched up in the mists of India’s stunning Lake District, with holy Nainital Lake below and picturesque pine forest all around.

It’s got four luxurious suites, all double-bedded, all featuring rugged floors, wooded ceilings, orange lights and a delightful sense of a bygone age. You can enjoy tea on a superbly-landscaped verandah and sumptuous meals in The Hive’s own fully-staffed restaurant.

This Uttrakhand homestay’s unassuming and friendly hosts, Dr Ranjit Bhargava and wife Shruti, love to meet visitors. Ranjit is a respected environmentalist and author. He likes photography, gardening and reading. Shruti enjoys gardening, cooking, culture and music.

What’s particularly interesting about this Nainital house is that it was once the home of legendary hunter Jim Corbett‘s family. A hero in the region back in the early 1900s, Corbett single-handedly took on the man-eating tigers and leopards that had taken the lives of 450 Indians. He was a hunter, but he was also a passionate conservationist. The popular wildlife park he helped set up near The Hive is named after him.

The area is good for trekking, shopping and water activities on Nainital Lake, including yachting.

Take a look at the photos. Doesn’t this look like an extraordinary homestay experience? To find out more and book your accommodation now, visit The Hive’s page in our Nainital Homestays section.
