The diverse topography of India is often spoken about in reference to mighty mountains or the large coastline owing to its peninsular geography. Visitors also find that India has some beautiful lakeside locations, perfect for relaxing, wildlife spotting and exploring charming towns and villages. We highlight our top five lakes of India.

1. Vembanad in Kerala – Vembanad Lake of Kerala does not represent the quintessential lake which is surrounded by mountains, but instead offers visitors a unique backwater experience. The Vembanad Lake can safely be called the ‘harbour of houseboats’ and stretches for 14 kms at its widest point. It is the largest lake in India. The Punnamada part of the lake is also the annual destination for the famous Snake Boat Race in Kerala.

2. Nainital and the lakes around – Nainital and the towns around it draw a parallel where the lakes of the cities are concerned. While Nainital is built around the Naini Lake, places like Bhimtal, Sattal and Nachiketa Tal form a similar pattern. This cluster of lakes in the region make for an interesting place for camping, boating, fishing and other water based activities. Moreover they provide a beautiful backdrop to these already charming destinations.

3. Periyar Lake – The 26 sq kms of the Periyar Lake compliments the Periyar Wildlife sanctuary in the southern district of Idukki in Kerala. The lake also serves as great view point to watch the elephants and other wildlife come for a drink of water. The best way to experience the lake is to take a raft ride for the day to watch the thriving eco system of the Periyar National Park.

4. Lake Pichola – The artificial fresh water lake situated in Udaipur is one of the distinct features historical Rajasthan. The Aravalli Range of mountains stand in the backdrop while the famous heritage hotel stands in the middle of the lake, making it a coveted tourist spot. This was a former summer palace built by the legendary Maharana Udai Singh in 1559 A.D. The other lakes in Udaipur are Udai Sagar Lake, Fateh Sagar Lake, Rajsamand Lake and Jaisamand Lake.

5. Dal Lake in Kashmir –A constant companion to the Bollywood movies of yester years, the Dal Lake is of monumental importance in the lives of the Kashmiris. A whole community exists around the lake with vegetable vendors drifting in small boats, school children using the boats to get to school and of course the plenty of houseboats that are still sprinkled on the calm waters. Kashmir has inimitable natural beauty and the Dal Lake has always demanded a prime spot on the list of things to do here.

Our heritage homestay series discovers homestay options that allow you to explore the historical side of India. The Cottage, in the valley of Jeolikot has an illustrious history relating to Swami Vivekananda. This homestay in Nainital is estimated to be up to 700 years old and provides an unforgettable homestay experience.

THE HOME

Different levels of the house form an amusing labyrinth, leading you from one ornate space to another. The décor is an amalgam of thoughtful gifts given by prestigious artistes and visitors as well as artifacts picked up over the years by the hostess. The property extends downhill leading to an orchard full of juicy fruits and part of the land has been reverted back to the forest to keep benefit the natural flora and fauna. Barking deer, birds and wild fowl roam freely in the vicinity.

Swami Vivekananda, became known as India’s spiritual ambassador in America following his participation in the ‘Parliament of Religions’ held in Chicago, Illinois (USA) in 1893, at which he represented Hinduism. His vast knowledge of Eastern and Western culture as well as his deep spiritual insight, made a great impression in Europe and America. Vivekananda did spent some time in Nainital and he is known to have have meditated under a tree which stood now where the sitting area of The Cottage begins.

In the local area a visit to the neighbouring tea shop is enjoyable, which can be the perfect final course to a delicious meal. A crackling bonfire in the sit-out on a chilly night is the perfect way to see an enchanting and rare sight – the distant lights from Nainital making an ‘Aum’ sign.

THE HOST

Mrs. Bhuvan Kumari is the heart and soul behind The Cottage. It was her childhood dream to open a homestay like this in the valley of Jeolikot. And towards this endeavour she passionately scouted for the perfect home. Finally, this 200-700 years old typical Kumaoni home caught her fancy and it became The Cottage, which was started 15 years ago. With the essence of the old village house intact she has overseen the meticulous restoration of The Cottage.

Sometimes referred to as the land of rivers the waterways of India play an essential role in day to day life with strong religious, cultural and economic significance. Tourists can enjoy the Indian lakes and rivers in a number of ways, from exploring spiritual lakes to riding white knuckle river rapids.

Ganga Dashara Festival

Haridwar: One of the holiest places in India is Haridwar (the gateway to God). Millions of people come here to wash away their sins with a dip in the Ganga. Haridwar is particularly crowded during the Kumbh and Maha Kumbh Melas. These two festivals attract a sea of humanity and is popular with both devotees and photographers.

Rishikesh: Rishikesh attracts a very diverse crowd. It is packed with pilgrims as well as adventure seekers. This is one of the most popular places in North India for white water rafting. Rafting and kayaking here are seasonal sports because during monsoons the Ganges becomes extremely dangerous. Rafting camps are organized in Shivpuri, which is very close to Rishikesh.

Chhota Chaar Dhaam: Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath together form the Chhota Chaar Dhaam (the smaller holy four centers). The religious centers offer visitors divine beauty and an adventurous experience. One has to brave highly testing terrains to reach these locations. The glaciers that are the actual source of the Ganga and Yamuna are slowly melting, which has added to the urgency in people to see them as soon as possible. Of all the locations, Kedarnath is the hardest to reach and is off limits to people for several months of the year.

Rental boats on the shores of Nainital

Nainital: Nainital is possibly North India’s most popular hillstation particularly amongst families. Nainital is the land of nine lakes and the most popular activity here is boating on the Naini Lake. One can hire row boats, pedal boats or sail boats to explore the massive lake.

Bhimtal: The Bhimtal Lake is the largest lake in the district of Nainital and people come here in large numbers from Nainital for boating. On the lake’s island there is a beautiful aquarium, which replaced a famous but overcrowded restaurant. The aquarium houses many species of fish from all corners of the world.

Naukuchia Tal: just 4 kilometers from Bhimtal is Naukuchiatal. The serene lake rests at an altitude of over 1,200 meters. Activities like boating and walks around the lake are popular amongst young couples as well as families. Naukuchiatal attracts large numbers of migratory birds from all over the world and is a haven for birdwatchers.

Gurudongmar lake

Sikkim: One of the 7 states that make up India’s North East is Sikkim. And in North Sikkim one can find the revered Gurudongmar Lake. To reach this enigmatic lake one has to undertake a two-day expedition as this is one of the highest lakes in the world. Another spiritually significant lake in Sikkim is Lake Khecheopalri. It is a two-hour drive from Gangtok and is respected as a wish fulfilling lake.

Manali: White water rafting on the River Beas is a popular adventure sport in Manali. The 10 kilometer trip down the river starts at Mohal offering grade II and III rapids. Rafting season usually lasts from April till June and September to October but monsoons highly influence the possibility of undertaking a trip. A famous source of hot springs in Manali is Manikaran. It is located between River Beas and River Parvati at an altitude of over 1750 m. The spring is believed to have curative powers and is important for its piligrim centres.

Reflection on Dal Lake

Jammu and Kashmir : Located in the state’s capital of Srinagar is the beautiful Dal Lake. This is the sight of quintessentially Kashmiri scenes which have captured the world’s imagination for decades. The view of floating shikaras, houseboats and the floating gardens is simply mesmerising. These shikaras and houseboats are easily available for rent. Unfortunately, the river has suffered extensively due to years of eutrophication but the government has now undertaken multimillion dollar drives to restore the lake to its original glory. In Srinagar one can also find the beautiful Chashme Shahi (Royal Spring). This is the smallest Mughal garden in Srinagar but is home to many springs, cascades and fountains.

Leh and Ladakh: Ladakh is one of India’s most enigmatic regions and it’s a splendid retreat for adventure seekers who love truly daunting challenges. In Ladakh one can choose from many rafting options that are carried out on the River Indus and its tributaries. While the easiest trip would be in Karu, a popular stretch is the one between Spituk and Saspol. The rapids beyond Saspol can turn the nerves of the most hardened thrill seekers to jelly. Another such stretch is the route between Padum and Nimo. This journey requires advance preparation. The most intimidating route is the one involving the mighty Zanskar. Even with professional guides and participants, rescue crews are a pre-requisite on this journey.

Staying in a homestay provides an excellent base to explore India from as your hosts will be able to help you plan activities and can advise you on local sights. You can build your own custom itinerary staying in our network of award winning homestays with the help of our reservations team.

With summer knocking at North India’s door, it’s time to plan the annual escape and head for the hills. But unlike the past, this season discover an unexplored side of the most popular hill stations in India by staying in a homestay.

1.	Make the most of Manali
A short drive from the main Manali town is Manali Meadows (pictured above), a homestay enveloped by serenity and undisturbed natural beauty. The peace of the surroundings is carried into the décor of the house, which is soothing and warm. This homestay in Manali has three spacious and distinctly styled guest bedrooms, each with an ensuite bathroom and a balcony, which affords guests a different view of the region’s beauty. Tucked away in the foothills and surrounded by infinite cedar trees the homestay’s offers different vistas with every season. The homestay’s front lawn has a small camping tent for those who wish to rough it out for a night. The main Manali town, many monasteries, the snow clad Rohtang Pass and the over 400 year old Hidimba temple are all nearby the homestay. Treks, skiing, white water rafting and other adventure sports can be easily arranged for guests. For a more relaxed interaction with nature, you can go to a farm to enjoy orchard farming, honey collection and other rural activities.

2.	The best of Bhimtaal
A testing climb from Bhimtaal will take you to an oak forest beyond Jangali Gaon (Wild Village) where you will come across Emerald Trail (pictured above), a homestay perched on the highest edge of the village. All the rooms in this homestay are large and offer enchanting views of the region’s grand hills and deep valleys. The home is bedecked with antique furniture and the generous use of wooden panels enhance the warm feel radiated by the home. The house has lots of open sitting areas, where children can run around and play for hours. At the homestay you can lend a hand in the daily chores which include milking the cows, picking vegetables and feeding the animals. Tours to the revered Kailash Mandir, Ranikhet, Naukuchiyataal, Bhimtaal, Saattaal and more can be organized with ease. Many nearby trails offer opportunities for walking, cycling and treks. Stargazers will find the family’s telescope handy when it comes to spotting bright constellations. Paragliding can be enjoyed from a site near the homestay.

;

3.	Homestays in and around Nainital
Set in 8 acres of land The Cottage (pictured above) radiates grace, peace and history. The homestay’s living room is believed to have been the site where Swami Vivekanada meditated under a tree. The home began hosting guests fifteen years ago with just one room but now five exquisite rooms are available for guests. Other than the sprawling home, the property also houses a fruit orchard and animals like the barking deer can be seen from the house. With many echelons the homestay is reminiscent of a playful maze, which surprises you with each turn and corner. Rare paintings done by famous artists as well as previous visitors adorn home and speak of the bond formed between the guests and the host. The bathrooms, much like the home, are cheerful, creative and aesthetically done. The homestay is close enough from Nainital, Bhimtaal, Sattaal and Naukuchiyataal for day tours to be comfortably undertaken then, in the evening, return to The Cottage for a bright bonfire and to see the lights of the region make an “Aum” symbol.

The Hive (pictured above) is a buzzing homestay, which was built in the 1860’s. It boasts of a British colonial architecture complemented by impeccably maintained landscapes. The home has a rich history as it was the home of Christopher Corbett, Father of Jim Corbett. Today The Hive serves as a prestigious homestay for guests of Nainital. Perched on the Ayarpatta hill, The Hive is within walking distance to the Mall road but far enough from its noise and chaos. The homestay has four large and welcoming suites, all with ensuite bathrooms. From the patio you can enjoy picturesque vistas of the region that’s rich with flora and fauna. The home has an old world charm with a warm and earthen ambience that’s enhanced by the generous use of wood and sunlight. The homestay has a private restaurant but also an outdoor verandah – perfect for enjoying snacks and tea in the company of vibrant flowers. The home is just 100 meters away from the protected forests of Ayarpatta hill allowing you to be close to nature and protecting the home from the ill-effects commercialisation. Major attractions near the homestay are the Naina Lake, Nanda Devi temple, St. John’s church and Naina Peak. The Mall is an ideal place for walks, shopping for locally produced goods and trying lip-smacking street food.

Cloaked by the majestic Shivalik range is The Nest Cottage, a peaceful retreat overlooking the Jim Corbett National Park. The homestay has seven lovely private cottages perched on different echelons of the property, offering divines sunsets to guests. A charming fireplace and use of stone and wood in each room augments the natural feel of the property. A rain water harvesting pool feeds the homestay’s greenhouse. Organic cereal, fruits and vegetables are grown on the owners’ farm nearby which are used for self-consumption and sale. The region is rich in trekking trails, which are also suitable for quiet strolls. Picnics in the jungle are great fun followed by bird watching in Kumaon. Popular sightseeing destinations like Nainital, Bhimtaal, Naukuchiyataal, Sattaal etc. are a short drive away. Lesser known gems of the region like natural springs and the ancient caves of Pangot are also nearby. Horse riding can be arranged for children who also enjoy picking fresh produce at the family’s farm.

4.	Where to stay in Shimla
Deep Jyoti (pictured above) is a quiet homestay, just 15 kilometers from Shimla town. A trek from the home to the top of the Tarab Mountain will lead visitors to the Tara Devi temple, which offers panoramic vistas of the region. A visit to the nearby villages and sightseeing to Solan’s many forts, sanctuaries and temples can be arranged.

Mid Hills homestay is perfectly located between areas of protected forests, protecting it from development so it retains its peace. The homestay is set to the background of rich forests, apple orchards and more. The homestay is split into two with one section is for the hosts and the other a dedicated area for guests. This affords guests privacy but keeps them in contact with the family. The guest rooms are modern and charming. Their large windows allow sunlight to filter in and wake up guests with a glorious view. The homestay’s two balconies are available for the pleasure of guests and from here one can soak in divine vistas of the region around.

Nainital is one of North India’s most popular and famous hill stations. And here are 11 ways in which you can make the most of this land of the nine lakes.

1. Lake lovers
Nainital’s most popular feature are its numerous lakes, making boating a popular pastime. You can opt for a paddle boat, where you do all the work, or a languid ride on a row boat, operated by the boat’s owner. For those skilled at sailing, sailboats are easily available for rent as well. You can hire any of these options for as long as you want. Bargain over the price – it’s common.

2. The height of beauty
As you enjoy the panoramic vistas of the city below, the Naini Cable Car takes you up to Snow View, a beautiful viewpoint located 7,500 ft above sea level. The popular tourist spot offers enchanting vistas of the Himalayan range. Be sure to grab a cup of hot chai and some steaming pakoras from one of the food stalls before you leave.

3. Hello Himalayas
There’s a viewpoint is located between Nainital and the town of Kilbury. It’s proudly perched at an impressive height of 2300 meters and offers wonderful views of the majestic Himalayas. It is one of the lesser known viewpoints around Nainital. It’s worth seeking out, away from the crowds and chatter.

4. A walk to remember
The best place to enjoy a trek or walk in Nainital is Thandi Sadak or Cold Street. It’s a lovely spot to find solitude and has a romantic ambiance. Your walk will be lined by tall, lush pines, deodars and oaks. During summer and fall, your walk will be set to the sweet sound of chirping birds and the gentle breeze rustling through the leaves.

5. Test of the terrain
Naina Peak is the highest peak in Nainital and obviously provides unmatched vistas to those who can take on the intense journey. Even the most skilled hikers find the journey daunting but the company of cheery rhododendrons, soaring deodars and lush cypresses is a welcome distraction. If you have persevering feet, then the peak rewards you with a magnificent bird’s eye view of Nainital, the Himalayas and the Terai region. Given the right season you can enjoy a 360 degree view of snow-cloaked Himalayas.

6. In the company of fish
Bhimtal has long been one of the most popular day trips from Nainital. A 22 kilometre long journey will take you to this small but popular island. Nainital’s authorities recently replaced Bhimtal’s overcrowded restaurant with an enchanting aquarium, which houses a variety of fish from all over the world such as South Africa, Mexico and China.

7. Let’s celebrate
All year round, vibrant festivals can be observed in Nainital. Whether or not you understand their historic and religious importance, they’re always fun to participate in. Most of the festivals are all about building community spirit and are filled music, dance and colours, as well as delicious local specialties.

8. Putting green
Golf has arrived in Nainital. The 9-hole course is fun, simple to master and can be enjoyed by people of all ages. It’s a great way to bond with the family while honing your putting skills.

9. Horsing around
An interesting way to explore Nainital is on horseback. If you can’t ride well, the horse’s owner will accompany you. Pony rides are available for children.

10. Shopping
In Nainital you’ll find inexpensive, locally produced, and usually handmade merchandise. It is very popular for its unique and interesting candles. From a glittering Christmas tree to a jolly Buddha with a wick sticking out of his head, you’ll find lots of choice when it comes to souvenirs.

11. A day away
Nainital is surrounded by lakes that are getaways in their own right. One of such places is Sat-tal, which literally means “seven lakes.” It is one of the places around Nainital that have not been overwhelmed by commercialization and crowds. The other option is called Naukuchiyatal. This is a small and beautiful lake which has nau (nine) corners. It is just four kilometers from BhimTal and enveloped by lush green hills. The perfect place to be with yourself and your thoughts.

You can stay in Nainital, in the former property of Jim Corbett’s father with Mahindra Homestays. Book on the main site.

Jim Corbett National Park has long been the favored getaway for explorers and wildlife lovers in India. Here are nine things that attract people to the wild adventure that is Corbett.

1. Jeep safari
Jim Corbett National Park is most famous for its flora and fauna. The park houses many endangered species such as tigers, chital, sambar and even the humble deer. A great way to explore the landscape and see these animals going about their daily life is on a jeep safari. Ask your driver to go off the fixed route and you’ll get some rare insights into the animals’ lives.

2. On the shoulders of giants
An elephant safari lets you have an adventure within an adventure. The size of the creature deters predators from coming too close for comfort. They maneuver the grasslands with ease and in silence, with only the occasional sound of their trumpet aimed at a bully trying to intimidate the gentle giants.

3. Camping in Corbett
There are plenty of resorts in Corbett, but camping is a great experience for those who like to rough it out – though they do have basic amenities.

4. Click away
Corbett is a favourite of wildlife photographers, who spend days looking for the illusive tiger, often in vain. But the region’s majestic terrain offers great landscape shots as well, like panoramic views of the Shivalik and the Himalayas. The lesser discovered Terai region is a great place to capture views that go beyond the frequently seen compositions.

5. Far away festivals
The resorts and campsites usually offer fantastic packages on festivals. Particularly around New Year and Christmas they offer plenty of holiday packages, complete with champagne, feasts and safaris. The music here isn’t played from giant speakers. Rather, the chirping birds and rustling leaves take on that role. For some, this is a luxurious and intimate way to enjoy the festivities, far from the hustle and bustle of the big, bad, cities.

6. Take the wheel
The rivers in and around Corbett are spectacular places to drive or walk by. If you can get the permission, you can have a cozy little picnic set to the sound of serene water flowing by. The rivers are rich in many forms of minerals and sand. The result of this is a vibrant location with countless hues of gold, brown, and rust.

7. See creatures
To spot Corbett’s exotic marine life you should dedicate a few hours to The Ramganga. This is home to the exotic mahseer fish, the endangered gharials, mugger crocodiles, otters and turtles amongst others.

8. Bird watching
Many species of rare birds call the Corbett their home. And owing to the Ramganga’s rich marine life, you can spot many birds feasting here. Kingfishers, fish-eagles, storks and many other birds are seen here in large numbers swooping down to grab a bite. In winters, this reservoir is visited by many migratory birds and the bird lovers that follow them. The birds come from as far away as Europe and Central Asia.

9. Star gazing
The best part about places away from the big cities and their bright lights is gazing at a sky full of stars. For those who spend all their days in the urban world, this is a rare and welcome sight. You can spend hours spotting the different constellations. Some are visible with remarkable ease and unexpectedly bring out the child in you as you gaze in wonder.

Nainital, where we have just revealed our latest homestay, is Jim Corbett country. With Mahindra Homestays you can now stay in the former property of Corbett’s father.

But who was Jim Corbett and why is he still revered in the part of Uttarakhand known as India’s lake district?

In the early 1900s, villages in this largely mountainous and forested northern state of India lived in fear of man-eating tigers. Thousands of people were killed in the first half of the 20th century by wild cats. One animal alone, known as the Champawat Tiger, ravished over 400 locals.

Jim Corbett was a self-taught tracker and hunter who had grown up in the hills and woods around Nainital. Son of a postmaster (our homestay is the former post office for the area) he developed a deep bond with his surrounding environment as a boy.

He became known as an expert slayer of dangerous animals. But he would only hunt down a tiger if it was a proven killer, and even then he remained sympathetic to the creatures.

Both Indians and the British colonial authorities would often write to Corbett, pleading his help to rid an area of a man-eating tiger or leopard. And Corbett would usually respond.

Jim Corbett killed more than 30 tigers and leopards in his lifetime, saving the lives of many more people. He wrote a book about his adventures, Man-eaters of Kumaon, and the oldest national park in India – which he helped set up – was named after him. Jim Corbett National Park is one of the few places you can see the endangered Bengal tiger. Watch a video of the wildlife reserve below.

If you love adventure, wildlife or the environment, and you’re keen to explore Corbett country, there’s only one place to base yourself: The Hive, Corbett’s old family property. Your host Dr Ranjit Bhargava, himself an esteemed environmentalist, will no doubt tell you more about this legendary local figure.

We have a new homestay – and it has got a fascinating history.

The Hive is perched up in the mists of India’s stunning Lake District, with holy Nainital Lake below and picturesque pine forest all around.

It’s got four luxurious suites, all double-bedded, all featuring rugged floors, wooded ceilings, orange lights and a delightful sense of a bygone age. You can enjoy tea on a superbly-landscaped verandah and sumptuous meals in The Hive’s own fully-staffed restaurant.

This Uttrakhand homestay’s unassuming and friendly hosts, Dr Ranjit Bhargava and wife Shruti, love to meet visitors. Ranjit is a respected environmentalist and author. He likes photography, gardening and reading. Shruti enjoys gardening, cooking, culture and music.

What’s particularly interesting about this Nainital house is that it was once the home of legendary hunter Jim Corbett‘s family. A hero in the region back in the early 1900s, Corbett single-handedly took on the man-eating tigers and leopards that had taken the lives of 450 Indians. He was a hunter, but he was also a passionate conservationist. The popular wildlife park he helped set up near The Hive is named after him.

The area is good for trekking, shopping and water activities on Nainital Lake, including yachting.

Take a look at the photos. Doesn’t this look like an extraordinary homestay experience? To find out more and book your accommodation now, visit The Hive’s page in our Nainital Homestays section.
