India is full of interesting historical forts. A beautiful and well preserved example is the spectacular Sindhudurg Fort in Maharashtra, looking out over the Arabian Sea.

HISTORY
Sindhudurg Fort was built in 1664 by King Shivaji. The strategic rocky island location was carefully chosen to counter foreign forces, and to keep the nearby villages in check.

Located 510kms south of Mumbai and 130kms north of Goa the construction was done under the supervision of Hiroji Indulkar, an able architect. It is said that Shivaji invited 100 Portuguese experts from Goa for the construction of the fort and that 3000 workers were employed round the clock for three years to build Sindhudurg.

After Shivaji, Sindhudurg passed through the hands of Rajaram-Tarabai, Angres, Peshwa and the Bhosales of Kolhapur. It was briefly captured by the British in 1765 Ad And was renamed by them as ‘Fort Augustus’. Later in 1818 AD, the British dismantled the fort’s defence structures.

STRUCTURE
The 48 acre Sindhudurg fort has a four km long zigzag line of a 9 metres high and 3 metres wide rampart with 42 bastions.

The fort is approachable from the Malavan pier by a boat through a narrow navigable channel between two smaller islands of Dhontara and Padmagad. The main gate, flanked by massive bastions, faces the city.

One of the most interesting features of this port is that the design of main door is an enigma, a hallmark of Maratha Architecture of fort building so that the entry can’t be located by attacking forces. The technique was so deceptive that the entrance was concealed due to blind curves. The zigzag pattern of outer wall was so built that the enemy would be visible from any point inside the fort and the troops inside could fire their guns and cannons effectively.

INTERESTING FACTS AND ATTRACTIONS INSIDE THE FORT

Shivaji’s palm and footprints are preserved here on dried lime slabs in a tower. Inside the Fort, temples of Bhavanimata, Shambhu Mahadev, Jirimiri, Mahapurush and Shivajeshwar are worth seeing, all of which are in good condition.

Chatrapati Shivaji’s younger son Rajaram in his remembrance built this temple. Shivaji’s idol stands in a boatman’s attire inside the temple and probably only one of its’ kind in the country – where the image of Shivaji is without a beard.

Outside the southern wall there is a small beach, called Ranichi Vela (Queen’s private beach), where Queen Tarabai, daughter-in law of Shivaji, used to enjoy her sea-bath.

Inside the fort there are three wells of drinkable water, which is a nature’s marvel as sea surrounds the fort on all four sides.

On a rocky island between Sindhudurg and the coast stood the small fort of Padmagad, now in ruins. It acted as a shield for Sindhudurg and was also used for shipbuilding

The fort also houses a coconut tree which has a branch and also gives fruit. (No other coconut tree has a branch.)

There is a hidden passage that starts in a temple that looks like a water reservoir and goes under the island for 3 km, under the sea for 12 km, and from there 12 km to a nearby village. The tunnel was used as an escape route for the women if the enemy entered the fort. However, the British partially closed this passage after the fort was abandoned.

Panchgani is a delightful hill station in the Sahyadri hills in Maharashtra. The unhurried relaxed charm, fresh air, strawberry farms, ravines and rivers and quaint old bungalows make it the perfect getaway.

We look at some of the places in Panchgani to explore. If the weather is good head out into the great outdoors with a picnic. Pack your baskets, fold up your sheets, get out and enjoy the sights of this delightful hill station.

Tableland
Panchgani’s crowning glory, this is a vast stretch of flat plateau offering great views of the hill station. Situated at an elevation of 4,550 ft, Tableland is a laterite rock formation, said to be the second-highest volcanic mountain plateau in Asia. The plateau gets covered with gorgeous blue bonnets and star and grasses from August-October. During peak season, there’s lots to do here with Ferris wheels, a merry-go-round, toy train, pony and horse rides and games stalls.

Parsi Point
A popular picnic spot with beautiful views of the Dhom Dam backwaters and the lush Krishna Valley. It used to be a favourite spot for the Parsis of Panchgani at one time, hence the name.

Sydney Point
Situated upon a small hillock facing the Krishna Valley, Sidney point presents enchanting views of the valley and the tranquil lake of the Dhom Dam.

Dhom Dam
The Boat Club on the waters of the dam provides water bicycles and steamers.

Devil’s Kitchen
This cave is located in the southern part of Tableland and is believed to have served briefly as a shelter for the Pandavas during their exile.

Venna Lake
Venna Lake is located on the Panchgani – Mahabaleshwar road. Fishing and boating are popular here and you can also enjoy the mini train ride and stalls offering food and drinks and some games.

Kate’s Point
Located about 5 km away from Venna Lake towards Panchgani, this place has a beautiful view of the Krishna Valley and the Dhom Dam. It was named after the daughter of Sir John Malcom, who ‘founded’ Mahabaleshwar as a British hill station.

Sherbaug
Located just beyond the Check Post, this place has a huge cacti collection, a restaurant and a children’s park.

Mapro farm
You can get a delicious lunch of cheese sandwiches, pizzas and strawberry creams at the Mapro farm, a couple of kilometers towards Mahabaleshwar. Don’t forget to pick up some fresh jam and syrups.

WHERE TO STAY
Panchgani has some good places to stay in. Dala Rooster homestay is themed after the Scandinavian coloured rooster, hence the name. Some of the iconic colours have been used in the house imbibing the Swedish look. An added advantage is that pets are allowed here.

GETTING TO PANCHGANI
Panchgani is 98 km from Pune, 266 km from Mumbai, and 20 km from Mahabaleshwar. You can take the NH4, via Pune, Surul and Wai or come down NH17, via Poladpur. The nearest airport is Pune. By rail: Nearest rail head is Wathar.

Our guide gives you the essential visitor information.

About the sanctuary
The wildlife sanctuary has four major trails and umpteen opportunities to spot wildlife. Though spread over only 52 sq km, the Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary is replete with a large variety of flora and fauna.

It is well known for its population of leopards, hyenas, jungle cats, barking deer, sambhar, wild boars, giant squirrels and bonnet macaque. Even the bird watchers have a notable list of avian friends to follow- Pied hornbills, three toed Kingfishers, Malkohas, Pittas and more. Almost 90 species of butterflies and a number of insects are also a part of the sanctuary. For herpetology enthusiasts, there are a large number of poisonous and non-poisonous snakes. With its growing popularity, specialists are at work in identification of all flora and fauna. The list of plants stands at about 710.

Getting Around
The Phansad Wildlife Santuary is a favourite with weekend photographers, who are free to take guided hikes around the forests on the specified trails. Private vehicles need prior permission from the Forest officials. Observation kiosks are made near the water bodies.

Guest blogger Rajaram shares his photos and experiences of the beautiful Konkan beaches of Kashid, Murud and Akshi.

The Konkan beaches are something straight out of fantasy for the inland dweller and it was no different for me, living in Pune. For my colleagues at work, any free weekend meant a drive to one of the numerous beaches on the western coast. I too went on one such journey on a cool winter weekend.

I didn’t want to drive far and spend my energy on the travel rather than at the destination. So, the stretch starting from the south of Alibaug until Murud beach was shortlisted for the trip. I was advised to skip Alibaug as it is almost always crowded and not the cleanest of beaches.

If you start on the coastal road going south from Alibaug, everyone would point to Kashid as the “next” touristy place, but there are some interesting detours on the way. Around 5 kms south of Alibaug, is a small village Akshi. If you drive into the village from the main road for around 3-4 kms, you hit Akshi beach, an unspolt beach hidden away from touristy eye. Soft clean sand and a shallow tide make the experience ethereal.

If you continue south and if you have a keen eye, you would notice that you are actually driving by the walls of an old fort. This is the Revdanda fort. You can also take a detour to the Korlai fort which juts out into the sea.

After you cross the bridge from Revdanda further south, taking the westward road will take you towards Kashid. Kashid beach, though the most popular in this area, is pretty clean. The soft white sand is quite cool even in the heat of the noon. You can spend a lot of time at Kashid, as there are many kinds of water sports e.g. Jet-Ski and banana boat, available here. You can also try the sand buggy or some parasailing. If you have the time and interest, you can visit the Phansad Wildlife Sanctuary just next to the beach. This sanctuary is good for bird-watching, though the guides tell you that there are leopards supposed to be in there.

Going further will take you to Murud, a small town referenced as Janjira Murud to distinguish it from another Murud 50 kms further south. Murud, in contrast to Kashid, has black sand, almost a volcanic feel to it.

Five kms from Murud is the village of Rajapuri, the base village for the Janjira fort, which of course, is to be shortlisted for the next trip.

Guest blogger Nisha shares her photographs and takes us on a trip to Matheran, an unpolluted hill station near Mumbai.

Matheran is a hill station just two hours away from Mumbai. I have been to this place twice but will not think twice to make yet another trip.

Developed by Britons, this small town has everything in place. It has hotels both with quaint and modern feel, a library for book lovers, a market, railway station, and only horses & rickshaws for commuting. Yes, you guessed it right. Any type of vehicle including bicycle, is not allowed on this hill settlement to keep it pollution free.

The name Matheran means ‘Jungle Head’, or ‘Forest on Top.’ Surrounding hills provide amazing views from Matheran. It is a heaven for nature lovers. With many trekking routes, view points, a lake and jungles it attracts all kind of tourists and travellers.

It is a perfect place to chill out in lazy summers.

But more than anything else what excites me is the toy train which is an attraction in itself for the visitors of Matheran. It is one of the four toy trains in India. Due to the steep slope, it takes around 90 minutes to cover the distance of 20 kilometers. The scenery changes from grassy slopes to shady tree covered hills.

Matheran’s is also famous for leather goods. Every other shop sells things like handbags, footwear, belts, wallets etc and at times it is hard to ignore them.

Here is Matheran in pictures.

Welcome to Matheran

Toy train going uphill to Matheran

After clicking this shot I realized there was a chameleon on this branch!

Absolute stunning view !

No need to go to South Africa. We have our own version of Table top.

Absolute silence. Most of the time there is no one in sight… occasionally some man on horse would pass by.

Single seater hand rickshaw with its proud owner.

En route trekking trails one can find these homes cum tea shops. The lady is trying to light the stove which is covered with a broken tin canister.

If you’ve come to Matheran, don’t go back without seeing the ‘Lord’s point’ … an advice written on a rock.

The market is flourishing with genuine leather goods. These hand painted leather hands bags come from Kolkata. Do I have to mention that the top shelf had one more masterpiece which is now in my custody?

Do you remember this souvenir?

Travelling in this toy train is absolute joy!

As the first shower of the season hits the coastal towns of India, off-beat traveller start planning a monsoon holiday. Not inhibited by clouds or even water wading moments, travelling during the Indian monsoons can be an invigorating experience. There is nothing better than a rain-washed, lush country side and of course discounted rates for many destinations. We take you through some of the best monsoon destinations in India and encourage you to head west!

Goa in monsoon season
Known for its sprawling beaches, an erstwhile legacy of hippy love and an alternative style made to fit, here’s Goa in a whole new light. There is such a distinct change in the environs of Goa between the hot summer months and the cloudy monsoons that it is even worth visiting twice in a year!

For those who want to feel the drizzle on their faces and have a different rendezvous with the sea, Goa should be on your list. While it rains ensure that you have a warm comfortable bed and some great conversation to bank on. Then take your weather beaten umbrella to the Vagator beach for a vantage view point at the Thallasa Greek Restaurant or sit at Fort Aguada to see the water from the skies and sea, mingle in a turbulent mess!

Travelling during the monsoon season is a great time to mix with the locals during some of the lesser known festivals. Bonderam is one such festival, which is specific to Divar Island, off Old Goa. To commemorate old battles fought, young boys and girls re-enact the times in costumes. Don’t miss their mock missiles made of berries and weapons of bamboos. The festival ends with a parade which has everyone joining in the merriment.

The monsoon season is also a good time to explore the wildlife of Goa. Take in the Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary, which is is not too far from Usgaon. Alternatively, just off Canacona, the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary is a great place to spot wild boar, langurs, bisons and plenty of avian life. Watch out for the leeches and be sure to carry some sturdy boots.

Kerala in monsoon season
The Western Coast remains one of greenest and freshest at this time, so Kerala should definitely be on the list. Depart from the coast onto the Northern and Western regions of the state. The Kasargod area still remains un-tread upon and of course Wayanad is an established getaway for the rains. While in Wayanad, see if you can catch the Splash Carnival, a Kerala Government endeavour where cultural programmes, indoor and outdoor games, and variety of competitions await travellers.

Maharashtra in monsoon season
Wander about on the Western Coast of the country and the delights don’t stop. For all of you who want to get out of jammed Mumbai roads in the thick of the monsoons, all you need to do is head out a short distance away. In Maharashtra take your pick from short hikes or long stays at Matheran, the Kondana and Kanheri Caves or just plunge into the frothy waters for a rafting trip.

Karnataka in monsoon season
Likewise, as you keep heading northwards, coastal Karnataka gets its fair share of monsoon magic in places like Dandeli and the Brahamgiri ranges. Apart from the fact that this time of the year is rather cooler and free of tourists the monsoon months also make many places affordable.

So pack your flip-flops and a sturdy umbrella and head out to towards the West coast of India.

Located just 33 kms from Alibaug in Maharashtra, Kashid is a perfect destination when you want to hit the beach or relax in the lap of greenery.

The beautiful Kashid beach stretches for 3 kms. Kashid beach is popular with a rock less shore and kilometres of soft sand. The entire spread is white and clear of any stones, rough patches or rocky areas. You can spot some adventure activities like surfing on the beach due to the high waves. Along the entrance of the beach are a few coconut vendors and a variety of eating stalls.

The beach is not very crowded and can be a fun place to relax and tan. Some beach areas are almost deserted offering you the opportunity to have your own private paradise – even if just for the day.

The waves here are unusually high for India and can be great for surfing enthusiasts. The waves can be up to 5-6 feet high even during the non-monsoon months. However, during monsoons they are dangerously high and surfing is not recommending from June to September.

Kashid was unknown till recent times. It tops the list of beaches for people looking for silence and calm environment.

Getting to Kashid Beach

Kashid beach is between 2-3 hours drive from Mumbai. Buses between Mumbai and Murud stop at Kashid.

The word Maharashtra comes from the words Maha meaning Great and Rashtra meaning Nation, and as the name suggests is an enormous state. It’s home of the Hindi film industry and in September, it’s the host for two stunning Hindu festivals. Now, just in time to pack your bags and lenses for the events, we bring you reasons why September is a great month for Maharashtra tourism.

GOKUL ASHTAMI

Also known as Janmashtmi in North India is this festival, which celebrates the birth of Lord Krishna. At this time, all of Mumbai is filled with groups of young men who try to erect huge human pyramids in order to reach a pot of curd or butter tethered to heights of over 30 feet. Women throw water at these men from their balconies to make the task even harder. The tradition draws its roots from stories of Lord Krishna’s childhood when he, along with his young posse, would sneak into people’s houses and steal the homemade butter hanging in pots from the ceilings. Today, groups successful in smashing the pots get lacs of rupees from the local organisers. Different scales of such contests are held in practically every colony of Mumbai and is a spectacle like none other. In 2010, the festival falls on September 2nd.

GANESH CHATURTHI

On the 11th of September, 2010 is the famous Ganesh Chaturthi. This date is final day of the 11-day long festival, on which all of Mumbai takes to the streets to take out processions carrying massive and colourful Ganesh idols. For the first 10 days Ganesha is worshipped in every home and on the 11th day the statue is immersed in a river or the sea. In some homes the immersion takes place on the 3rd, 5th or 7th day of the period. People from all religious and economic backgrounds patricipate in this festival. Even movie stars and sportsmen join shoulders with vegetable sellers to send the idols out to sea. The chants of ‘Ganpati bappa moriya’ fill the city. These Ganesha idols are prepared for months in advance for the festival some can be 25 feet high. In the affluent neighbourhoods they are adorned with elaborate clothing and sparkling accessories.

GANESH CHATURTHI IN SINDHUDURG
During Ganesh Chaturthi, the flavour of festival in Sindhudurg can be seen in many homes here. To enjoy how the locals celebrate the festival for all 10 days get in touch with Nandan Farms homestay. During this time, the homestay is drenched in decorations and festivities. A big idol of Lord Ganesha is brought home and flowers and lights bedeck the home. Guests are welcomed in tradition fashion to join in the celebrations.

GANESH CHATURTHI HISTORY
In Maharashtra, Ganesh Chaturthi was an important family oriented festival under the Peshwas. But in 1893, Lokmanya Tilak introduced it as a large-scale festival for the general public. This was done to bridge the gap between Brahmins and non-Brahmins and promote unity.

WEATHER
What adds to the drama of both festivals is the monsoon. Rain in the state and city lashes down the backs of participants and soaks them from head to toe. But people carry on undaunted towards their goal, at times seeming almost fuelled by the rain.

STAY
As the two festivals are far apart from each other, it’s advisable for people to make their base in Kashid, Sindhudurg or Goa At these scenic places you can easily camp out for 2 weeks and hop over to the city for these events getting the best of both worlds in the same trip. Sindhudurg in itself is a good place to enjoy Maharashtra’s unique Ganesh Chaturthi.

Day One: Margao, Goa
On your arrival in Margao, Goa you will be transferred to the Arco Iris Homestay. The bright yellow house stands vividly in the backdrop of one of the lakes of the Curtorim village. The large portico and the wide airy rooms are aesthetically done in the colours of the rainbow, after an innocuous declaration by their daughter – calling the house ‘a rainbow city’. The wide courtyard of the house and the hammocks outside call for lazing in or catching up on a good book. Suggested activities for the day include visiting the old churches of the Curtorim area.** The St. Alex Church built in 1597, makes a wonderful destination of a languid walk in the village. You can also opt for a picnic by the Zuari river* which can be combined with a boat ride.* The evening will give you the opportunity to taste the famous night life of Goa.**

Day Two: Margao, Goa
Spend your second day in Goa with a visit to Colva for a day of sun and sand. This popular beach also has plenty of opportunity for adventure enthusiasts with paragliding** and banana boat rides** both popular options. Goan beach shacks are the perfect place to stop for lunch. Being in the central area of Goa you can also opt to head a little further south to find some exclusive untouched beaches. In the evening you host can show you how to cook up some of your favorite konkan specials ***.

Day Three: Margao, Goa
Today visit Morjim, a village situated in north Goa in the Pernem district. It is home to a variety of birds and to the Olive Ridley turtle. Go shopping at the flea market. In the evening head out to the Casinos for some entertainment.**

Day Four: Sawantwadi, Maharashtra
Today you will be driven to the historic town of Sawantwadi in neighbouring Maharashtra. Tucked away on a small hillock near Sawantwadi is the picturesque Nandan Farms. The homestay is located in the middle of a 12-acre cashew, coconut, banana and pineapple farm. The mud walls, terracotta tiled roofs and solid wooden beams that support the sloping roof give a very earthy feel to this homestay. While retaining the old world charm of this house, the rooms are luxurious come with modern en-suite bathrooms. Enjoy a trip to the Sawantwadi Palace**, the island of Kurte where the 17th century Sindhudurg Fort** is situated and the Tarkarli Beach. You can also spend some time on the farm enjoying activities like a bullock cart ride*, bird watching and a guided tour of the mango and cashew orchards.***.

Day Five: Sawantwadi, Maharashtra
There are several options for excursions today. Situated within a 25 kilometers radius of this homestay are Vengurla; a place dotted with pristine beaches, Amboli; a British era hill station and Mangeli Waterfalls, among others.**
